  • This Imperial IPA was brewed by Grassroots Brewing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Olutravintola Pikkulintu in Helsinki, Finland. The beer is 12% ABV and is advertised with a massive 180 IBU! The beer is unfiltered and bottle-conditioned and was brewed with the following hops: Simcoe, Chinook, and Citra.

The beer has a orange-amber color, and is slightly hazy. The beer has an almost non-existing head, that leaves some lacing along the glass.

The aroma of this beer is very fruity, with hints of tropical fruits (passionfruit) and citrus (these aromas are very characteristic of Citra hops), as well as caramelly and malty.

As you take a sip, you are first met by a sweet and caramelly taste, which follows with some fruitiness from the hops and a slightly bitter aftertaste. Surprisingly low hop flavour and bitterness for this beast. I have really difficult time believing this beer really is 180 IBUs, as I've had beers with Sub-100 IBUs much more bitter than this. This beer is extremely well balanced though, as there is no overpowering flavour, and it is very easy to drink for a beer with 12% ABV (there is no indication of this high alcohol level at all). I would have wanted some more hop flavour from this one, but it is still tasty.

The beer has a quite full body with a medium-low level of carbonation. The beer is quite oily from the hoppiness, but very easy to drink considering its properties.

Overall a good beer, but am still slightly disappointed with this beer. A 'triple' IPA like this should have a more hop flavour and bitterness, and it might be that the bottle I received wasn't super fresh. The beer is very well balanced, and enjoyed drinking it. The selection of beer at Pikkulintu is fantastic and will definitely have to come back for another beer some day.

    1. The beer was released in Oct. 2010 so that might explain the lack of explosive hop flavor and aroma.

    2. Thanks for the comment! Yes, could very well be, as 8 months in a bottle doesn’t do very good to an Imperial IPA. I wonder if all bottles though are from the same batch, or if some have been brewed later? There was unfortunately no indication of brew date on the bottle.

    3. It was a 1 time brew that might be made again but currently only that 1 batch was made.
